Settle onto one side
Choose a clear mat area and lower yourself in a familiar way. Lie on one side only if the position suits you. Bend your knees as much as you prefer and use a modest head support if it helps you rest comfortably.
Place the lower arm where it does not feel trapped underneath you. Let the upper hand rest on the mat in front of your body. Take time to change the arrangement before moving, and leave the position if it feels awkward.
Explore the upper arm
Slide the upper hand a little forward along the mat, then bring it back. Keep the motion short and your body settled. You do not need to open into a large rotation or take the arm behind you.
If you want a different option, lift the upper hand a small distance and lower it again. Let breathing remain easy and natural. Repeat only while the movement feels comfortable, using a pace that leaves room to pause.
Change one leg detail
Keeping the legs supported by the mat, move the upper foot slightly forward and then return it. Choose a small distance so the movement remains uncomplicated. You can leave the lower leg where it is, rather than arranging both legs precisely.
Rest before trying anything else. A pillow between the knees may make the pause more comfortable for some people, but it is optional. Keep loose supports out of the route you will use when changing sides or getting up.
Give the second side a fresh start
Change sides using a route you know and can manage calmly. Rearrange the head support and arm placement before beginning again. The new side may prefer a smaller movement or a different knee position; there is no need to copy the first arrangement.
Finish in whichever comfortable position you prefer, or move to sitting with a pause between stages. A few small explorations are enough. The session is about finding a usable starting point, rather than making the movement larger with each repetition.
A few common questions
Must I open my arm all the way behind me?
No. This guide uses a small forward slide or a low lift. A larger rotation is not needed, and you can leave out any motion that does not feel comfortable.
What if side-lying does not suit me?
Choose a comfortable seated or reclining position instead. There is no benefit in staying in an arrangement you dislike simply to follow the article as written.
